Cali K9®‘s founder, owner, dog trainer and canine behavior expert Jas Leverette, was born in New York and grew up in Oakland, California. During his youth, he owned and trained dogs and horses, played youth football with the Oakland Dynamites, and participated in equestrian sports, including jumping, dressage, vaulting and trail riding. At Oakland High School, he played football and was an Oakland Athletic League wrestling champion.

He got his start training equines with natural horse training techniques that use body language to communicate. He’s trained hundreds of companion dogs, working dogs, and law enforcement K9s and dozens of professional dog trainers.

Jas is passionate about his work and has the natural ability to recognize drive, temperament, and disposition in all breeds and to communicate with animals. He has the know-how to optimize a dog’s true potential and the skill to temper and train even the most difficult dog. He currently owns a Dutch Shepherd, two Belgian Malinois, a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler.


Rich Akina is an expert modern dog trainer and the Manager of Dog Training Operations. He is a senior evaluator and teaches beginning through advanced group obedience classes, agility and private sessions. He was born and raised in San Jose and attended San Jose State University. He has owned dogs his entire life, including pugs, labs, staffies, pit bulls and a Dutch Shepherd.

Rich started his career as a Cali K9® client with his pit bull Devin. He possesses the intuitive ability to interact with all canine breeds and a natural aptitude for dog training, behavior recognition and modification. Dedicated to the Cali K9® Modern Dog Training Method™, he is the leader of the dog training team. He participates in protection dog sports in his spare time.


Kyle Score is an expert modern dog trainer and evaluator and trains dogs in private training sessions in San Jose. His areas of expertise include dog behavior recognition and modification, service dog training, working military and police K9s, dog sport training (Schutzhund, IPO and PSA) and field trial sport retrieving.

His extensive military experience as a U.S. Marine Corps K9 handler included explosives detection and K9 combat field medical care. Kyle currently trains local police K9s, participates in protection dog sports, and owns a Belgian Malinois and a Dutch Shepherd.


Rufus Skillern, known as “Ru”, is an experienced Cali K9®-trained modern dog trainer with a lifelong passion for dogs, who teaches private sessions and group obedience classes.

A childhood friend of Jas Leverette, Rufus grew up in Oakland, played youth football with the Oakland Dynamites, and was a standout football and baseball player at Skyline High School. He attended San Jose State on a football scholarship, where he was a starting wide receiver and earned his B.S. in sociology. He played professional football with the Baltimore Ravens and British Columbia Lions and retired from pro football in 2009. Rufus is married to Veronica, is the father of two, owns a Belgian Malinois and four Yorkies, and participates in protection dog sports.
